  31. SkyMap is a large package, and is normally distributed as
  32. two ZIP archives. These should be called "SKYMP20A.ZIP" and
  33. "SKYMP20B.ZIP". If you wish, the program may be distributed
  34. as a single file containing all the files from both archives,
  35. in which case it should be called "SKYMAP20.ZIP".
  36.  
  37. Of course, other file name extensions are perfectly acceptable
  38. when compression programs other than PKZIP are used.

  40. The package must be distributed "as is". You may add your
  41. own short promotional files to the package, but no files
  42. must be removed from it.

  48. SkyMap is a highly accurate "planetarium" for Windows 3.1.
  49. It can draw a map of the sky, as seen from any place on Earth,
  50. for any date between 4000BC and 8000AD, displaying stars,
  51. planets, comets, deep-sky objects, constellation names and
  52. figures, and a whole lot more.  Detailed information about
  53. any object on a map can be obtained simply by clicking on it
  54. with the mouse, and high quality charts can be printed on any
  55. printer supported by Windows.  Pictures of objects, in several
  56. formats, can be associated with objects and displayed, either
  57. manually or automatically.

  63. SkyMap v2.9 is a shareware "Planetarium" program for Microsoft
  64. Windows 3.1 or later. It will display a map of the sky as seen
  65. from any point on Earth for any date between 4000BC and 8000AD.
  66. Two different types of map can be drawn: a "Horizon" map showing
  67. the observer's local horizon, and a "Sky Area" map showing a
  68. detailed view of a small area of the sky.  You can "zoom in" on
  69. a map to a practically unlimited extent, and rapidly scroll
  70. around it.
  71.  
  72. There are many planetarium programs available today.  Unlike
  73. some of these, SkyMap makes no claims of blinding calculation
  74. speeds. Instead, what SkyMap concentrates on is accuracy.
  75. SkyMap uses the most accurate methods available to the author
  76. for all the calculations.  This accuracy makes SkyMap equally
  77. suited for both the novice astronomer who just wants to know
  78. "what's that bright object up there?" and the serious amateur
  79. or professional astronomer who wants a detailed "finder chart"
  80. for a faint galaxy.

  82. Examples of this accuracy are:
  83.  
  84.  -  Planetary positions have a mean error of less than half a
  85.     second of arc.
  86.  -  Star positions are rigorously corrected for the effects of
  87.     proper motion, precession, aberration, and refraction.
  88.     Planetary positions are corrected for aberration and
  89.     diurnal parallax.
  90.  
  91. SkyMap carries out its calculations in as efficient as manner as
  92. possible, but it never compromises accuracy for the sake of speed.
  93. An increase in speed can always be achieved by using a faster
  94. computer!  Having said all that, the speed is still reasonable;
  95. on the author's 33MHz 486-based PC for example, the horizon map,
  96. with default settings, is computed and drawn in about 5 seconds.

  98. The following information can be displayed on a map:
  99.  
  100. Stars:    SkyMap uses the SAO star catalog as the source of star
  101.           data. The shareware version of the program comes with a
  102.           database of 15,925 stars down to magnitude 7; the
  103.           registered version of the program is supplied with a much
  104.           larger star database, up to and including the complete
  105.           SAO catalog of 258,997 stars to magnitude 9.5 or so.
  106.           Stars can optionally be labelled with proper names, Bayer
  107.           letters, or Flamsteed numbers.

  109. Constellations: Constellation names, figures, and official IAU
  110.                 boundaries can all be displayed.
  111.  
  112. Planets:  The Sun, Moon, and planets can be displayed, labelled
  113.           with their standard astronomical symbols.  The Moon is
  114.           displayed with the correct phase and orientation.
  115.  
  116. Comets: The program maintains a catalog of comets, in which the
  117.         user may add, remove, and edit entries. Comets from the
  118.         catalog can be selected for display on the map.
  119.  
  120. Deep Sky Objects:  The complete RNGC catalogue of non-stellar
  121.                    objects is available. The user can select
  122.                    between the Messier catalogue or the complete
  123.                    RNGC catalogue, and can apply detailed
  124.                    selection criteria, such as "display globular
  125.                    clusters brighter than magnitude 11".
  126.  
  127. All types of object can be switched on or off with the click of
  128. the mouse, making it easy to see exactly the information you want,
  129. without being flooded with unwanted information.
  130.           
  131. Detailed information about any object can be obtained simply by
  132. clicking the mouse on it.  In the case of planets, the displayed
  133. information includes both positional (RA, Dec, Distance) and
  134. physical (Magnitude, phase, light time, elongation, phase angle
  135. etc) information.

  137. When you have a map as you want it, it can be printed on any type
  138. of printer supported by Windows.  The printed map is not simply a
  139. copy of the screen; it is printed at the full resolution of the
  140. printer.  Maps printed on a laser printer compare favourably with
  141. high-quality star atlases such as "Uranometria 2000".  Maps can be
  142. printed in either black and white or colour.  If you have a colour 
  143. printer you can select the colour of each component of the map.

  145. SkyMap can also display photographic images, supplied in the
  146. form of GIF, BMP or PDS files.   Thousands of such images are
  147. freely available on bulletin boards and commercial information
  148. systems such as CompuServe. This allows you to build up your own
  149. personal library of astronomical photographs which, coupled with
  150. the map displays, really helps to bring the sky to life.  Images
  151. can either be displayed manually, or can be linked with specific
  152. objects and displayed by simply clicking on the object on the map.

  155. System Requirements
  156. -------------------

  158. SkyMap will run on any computer supporting Windows 3.1, although a
  159. fast 386 or a 486-based computer is strongly recommended.  A maths
  160. co-processor is not essential, but again is recommended; SkyMap does
  161. a huge amount of trigonometry, and use of a co-processor can speed
  162. the program up by a factor of 10 or more!

  164. SkyMap runs under both OS/2 v2.1 and Windows NT v3.1 without
  165. problems.

  167. For the display of photographic images, a video card capable of
  168. displaying 256 or more colours (simultaneously) is recommended.
  169. Images CAN be displayed on a standard 16-colour VGA display,
  170. but will generally look pretty terrible!

  172. Maps can be printed on any printer supported by Windows.  Good
  173. quality maps can be obtained even from a 9-pin dot matrix printer.

  175. SkyMap's files require a total of 1.6MB of disk space.
